Priced at $35,000, at half the price of Tesla Model S, it is poised to fill the entry level void. Tesla will be able to get the Model E battery cost down to $8,100 as compared to that of $15,600 cost for the Model S battery, thanks to its forthcoming Gigafactory`s cheaper battery technology. The model is slated to be unveiled after Model X, an iconoclastic gullwing crossover, in 2016 and be made available for sale by 2017. No official images of the vehicle have been released by 2016 Tesla Model E so far and Elon has downplayed all the renderings of the car that have cropped up on the internet. It is however expected that the design will be quite similar to the current Model S.

This piece of engineering has been tauted as a rival to BMW 3 series in performance, price and even nomenclature. Tesla`s Vice President of Engineering Chris Porritt has confirmed that 2016 Tesla Model E will have a primarily steel body structure unlike Model S which had an alunimum body. Further it is expected that 2016 Tesla Model E will be built on a different platform than its predecessors, using different materials and cheaper technology. In an interview, Elon Musk stated that he was initially asked by a friend about the name of the latest Tesla car. He thought they had S for Model S and X for Model X. hence he might as will have a Model E and complete word “SEX”. He was quoted as saying “So I said we had the model S and X, we might as well have the E”. The change in the name from Model E to Model 3 is a result of legal entanglement with Ford which claimed the the trademark for Model E. Further, the “3” in Model 3 will be represented by three bars to represent Roman numeral “III”. Nevertheless it has not been confirmed whether the bars will be placed horizontally or vertically.

Model E carries a 48kWh electric battery pack which according to Elon Musk packs a realistic range of over 200 miles, with strong performace on a single charge.
